If you enjoy diving and spend a fair amount of time in the water, it is natural that you will consider getting an underwater camera for scuba. Twenty years ago, this would have meant a sizeable investment – a budget waterproof camera just wasn’t within reach for most people.
Now, however, finding a camera for underwater photography is a lot easier, even with a smaller budget. But how do you know that you are getting the best underwater diving camera for your money?
Do you have to shell out for a professional underwater camera, or will an affordable waterproof camera do just as well?
To make your life a little easier, we reviewed many an underwater compact camera. We have narrowed down the selection to four. On this list, you will fund a great top rated underwater camera and the best budget underwater camera.
We’ve chosen a range that won’t break the bank. But, before we get to the actual reviews, do you know what to look for in a waterproof camera?
When it comes to buying a diving cam, there are five major things to consider:
A compact camera, or point and shoot model is simple to use. A DSLR camera will usually have a wider range of settings that you can use. Which you choose is going to depend on your budget.
DSLR cameras usually offer a better quality photo because of the settings, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to do a great job with a compact camera. In fact, a compact camera might work better for a beginner because there are fewer adjustments that can be made.
Pricewise, a DSLR will usually cost more. You might be able to change out the lenses. Just keep in mind that these are going to be more complex and potentially bulkier.
It’s tempting to go and buy the shiniest camera you can find – one with all the gadgets included. But remember that all those extra features add to cost and the complexity of your camera. Are you really going to use all those features? Be honest now.
The fancier the features, the more you can expect to pay. But think about this for a moment, focus more on the quality of the lenses, and the actual performance instead of looking for something with all the shiny buttons.
If you are on a tighter budget, it might pay you to get a good quality camera housing and use it with the camera that you have instead. Do get the best cheap waterproof camera that you can afford.
This is an important distinction to make. If a camera is water-resistant, that usually means that it is okay to splash water on it. So if you take it with you when wind-surfing and it gets wet, it’s not such a big deal. That does not mean, however, that it is safe to take it under water.
You need to find a camera that is completely sealed and waterproof. One that if you drop it into a bucket of water, it is not going to get damaged. Often a camera of this nature will require more maintenance because it might have a system of O-rings to keep the water out.
If maintenance is not your thing, you should look for a camera that is completely sealed or get a casing instead.
The deeper you go, the higher the water pressure becomes. There is only so much pressure that your camera will be able to stand. Think about where you want to take it, and how deep you plan to dive. The deeper you want to go, the more of a high-end model you are going to need.
That will depend on the model that you get. We advise that you read through the manual carefully before taking it for a test drive. Yes, it’s boring, but you don’t want to do anything to mess up your camera, do you?
If you have a sealed camera that doesn’t need a housing, it’s simply a matter of aiming it, adjusting the settings for the best picture and then taking the shot.
If you do need a housing, you will need to put that on and make sure that it is properly secured before you climb into the water. You will adjust the settings and take the pics using the buttons and dials on the casing.
GoPro HERO5 Black 4K Action Camera
SeaLife Micro HD+ 32GB Wi-Fi Underwater Digital Camera
Nikon W300 Waterproof Underwater Digital Camera
AKASO 4K Wi-Fi sports Action Camera Ultra HD Waterproof DV Camcorder
You can usually get great deals online at Amazon for these items. We do advise checking what the return policy is for the shop that you are considering buying from and dealing with sellers that have an established record.
The Nikon is out choice for editor’s pick. We know what we said about not worrying too much about features, but this has some pretty cool features. What we really like about the features, though, is that they are useful.
Overall, the Nikon is a sturdily-built model and a true all-weather option.
Now that you know a little more about what to look for in an underwater camera, you can choose the right model for your needs. We hope that this post has been useful for you and hope you have a happy, snappy time with your new purchase.
